Hi
How are you?
Things are a bit full on and busy for me right now and being completely honest, I'm feeling mentally overloaded. So I've been prioritising managing my mental load, to help me to cope positively with all that is going on (both the positive and the challenging aspects).
Managing your mental load helps you to maintain productivity, reduce stress, and supports positive mental health. I thought I'd share a few practical and psychological tips, if you too find yourself mentally overloaded.
Top Tips
- Prioritise tasks - identify the most important tasks and focus your energy on them. I find catogorising tasks into urgent and important, helps me to prioritise effectively.
- Create to-do lists - maintain a daily or weekly to-do list. Write down tasks and deadlines to have a clear overview of what needs to be accomplished. Taking time to review and celebrate what you've accomplished at the end of each day is also helpful.
- Break tasks into smaller steps - large, complex tasks can be overwhelming. Break them into smaller, manageable steps to make them less daunting and easier to approach.
- Set realistic goals - avoid overloading yourself with tasks. Set achievable goals and deadlines to reduce the mental burden of unrealistic expectations.
- Delegate tasks - delegate task when appropriate. Delegating can lighten your load and enhance teamwork and social connection.
- Avoid multitasking - multitasking can increase mental load and reduce efficiency. Focus on one task at a time to complete it more effectively.
- Learn to say no - don't overcommit yourself. Politely decline additional tasks or responsibilities when you're already stretched thin.
- Take breaks - regular short breaks throughout the day can help refresh your mind, reduce mental fatigue, and improve overall focus and performance.
- Practice mindfulness - incorporate mindfulness and relaxation techniques into your daily routine, especially if you feel overloaded. Focussing on the senses stops the 'monkey mind' chatter, at least temporarily and lowers cortisol levels.
- Seek support and collaboration - seek help or collaborate with colleagues when you face challenges. Sharing the mental load can make tasks more manageable.
- Manage information overload - be selective about the information you consume. Unsubscribe from unnecessary emails, mute non-essential notifications, and limit exposure to distracting sources.
- Set boundaries - establish clear boundaries between work and personal life. Avoid bringing work-related stress home, and make time for leisure and relaxation.
- Self-care - prioritise self-care activities outside of work, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep, to help you maintain mental and physical wellbeing.
- Seek professional help - if work-related stress and mental load is become overwhelming, consider seeking professional support from a coaching psychologist or therapist.
Remember that effectively managing your mental load is an ongoing process. It's important to regularly assess your workload, adjust your strategies as needed, and seek support when necessary to maintain your mental wellbeing and work performance.
Cut yourself some slack and show yourself some compassion. You don't have to be superhuman to be valued and valuable - at work, in business or anywhere else.
Save this email for future use and also share it with anyone you think might benefit.
Until next time...
