A Practical Guide To Owning Your Growth In 2026

Hello
Happy New Year! I hope you've had an enjoyable holiday season and a great start to 2026.
A new year brings a natural opportunity to take stock, and decide what you want from the year ahead. Instead of waiting for your manager to shape the conversation, why not set the 2026 tone by taking charge of your own development from the very start.
This strategy that I use in 1:1 coaching sessions and workshops, is designed to help you focus your energy, articulate your ambitions, and build a development plan that feels motivating, achievable, and aligned with where YOU want to go.
Start with self-awareness - understand where you are and where you want to be. Before you make decisions about the future, take an honest look at the past year. Ask yourself:
- What did I do well?
- Where did I grow the most?
- What did I struggle with - and what did that teach me?
- What parts of my role give me energy?
- What am I curious to learn more about?
- Where did I grow the most?
- What did I struggle with - and what did that teach me?
- What parts of my role give me energy?
- What am I curious to learn more about?
This reflection gives you clarity on your strengths and highlights the areas where development will bring the biggest payoff.
Define what “progress” means for you this year - career development doesn’t always mean promotion. It can also be about:
- Deepening expertise
- Expanding influence
- Becoming more confident in a specific area
- Increasing visibility
- Exploring new interests
- Preparing for a future role
- Gaining broader experience
Choose the goals that genuinely matter to you, not just what you think you “should” aim for.
Choose a small number of focus areas - rather than trying to improve everything at once, identify three to four areas where growth will make the biggest difference. These might relate to:
- Technical skills
- Leadership capabilities
- Communication or collaboration
- Strategic thinking
- Project or stakeholder management
- Problem-solving
- Industry knowledge
Focused goals create momentum. Too many goals create overwhelm.
Turn each focus area into a concrete development activity - think about how you can build capability through action. Some powerful development methods include:
- Taking on a responsibility you haven’t held before
- Leading or co-leading a project
- Shadowing a colleague or manager
- Working with a mentor or coach
- Practising a skill regularly
- Participating in cross-team work
- Completing a course, qualification, or certification
- Seeking structured feedback
- Volunteering for tasks that stretch you
For each activity, define:
- What you will do
- When you will do it
- How you’ll know you’re making progress
That clarity turns good intentions into real development.
Prepare for a meaningful conversation with your manager - your development is most successful when you and your manager are aligned. Go into your conversation ready to talk about:
- What you want to learn
- Why it matters to you
- What you believe will help you grow
- The support you’ll need
- How often you’d like to check in
This positions you as proactive, motivated and committed to your own growth - whilst giving your manager a clear understanding of how they can help you to succeed.
Set up a review rhythm that keeps you on track - development doesn’t happen in one meeting - it happens through ongoing attention. Build a simple structure:
- Monthly or quarterly check-ins
- Notes on what you’ve tried and what worked
- Adjustments to your plan as your role evolves
- Recognition of your progress and wins
This helps you stay accountable, adapt as needed, and maintain momentum throughout the year.
